On August 18, ODPHP released Healthy People 2030 — the fifth iteration of the Healthy People initiative. Building on knowledge gained over the past 4 decades, Healthy People 2030 sets national objectives to address the nation’s most critical public health priorities.
With fewer objectives and higher data standards, Healthy People 2030 is more focused and rigorous than previous iterations of the initiative. New objectives for this decade address emerging health issues — like opioid use disorder and adolescents’ use of e-cigarettes and flavored tobacco.
And with our new Custom List tool, you can build a list of Healthy People 2030 objectives that are relevant to your work — and track them over the decade. You can also check out our COVID-19 Custom List to see objectives that are relevant to helping the nation become more resilient to public health threats like COVID-19.
In addition, we’ve made major changes to the online Healthy People experience. With intuitive navigation, a more sophisticated search tool, and objectives organized into user-friendly topics, it’s easy to find exactly what you’re looking for. Plus we’ve worked with our data partner, CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, to add an application programming interface (API) to support faster data releases.

- Evidence-based resources you can use to learn about proven strategies to improve health
We’ve also strengthened our focus on social determinants of health and health literacy. For the first time in the initiative’s history, the Healthy People 2030 objectives that are directly tied to social determinants of health have 10-year targets. And we’ve updated our health literacy definition to emphasize how both individuals and organizations can help improve health literacy. Along with eliminating health disparities and achieving health equity, addressing social determinants of health and health literacy is key to realizing our Healthy People 2030 vision and overarching goals.
Finally, watch for the upcoming Healthy People in Action blog series, where we’ll highlight some of our key partners. In posts over the next 6 months, we’ll explain how our partners use Healthy People in their work, form cross-sector collaborations, and address social determinants of health.
