Challenge Competition: Promoting Lifelong Healthy Habits Among Children and Adolescents from Medically Underserved Communities

The Promoting Lifelong Healthy Habits Among Children and Adolescents from Medically Underserved Communities Challenge is a two-phase prize competition offering up to $5,098,000 million in total cash prizes. The Challenge will recognize programs that help children and adolescents ages 5-19 build healthy habits that support lifelong health and well-being.

Rising rates of childhood obesity, chronic disease, poor mental health, and excessive screen use reveal the need to form stronger foundations for lifelong health. Children and adolescents thrive when they have access to nutritious foods, regular physical activity, time outdoors and away from screens, positive peer relationships, and opportunities to develop healthy habits and strong character. These foundational influences promote lifelong wellbeing while reducing the risk of poor physical and mental health conditions later in life.

Through this Challenge, HHS OMH seeks to identify and elevate programs that improve health outcomes by promoting nutrition, functional physical fitness, character development, positive social connections, time outdoors, and life skills that build resilience. Participants will be asked to provide evidence of program effectiveness and should demonstrate the potential to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents from medically underserved communities.

For Phase 1, up to 6 winners will be selected to each receive a $254,900 cash prize.
For Phase 2, up to 3 winners will be selected to each receive a $1,189,533 cash prize.

A pre-recorded informational webinar will be available in October 2026.
