High blood pressure, also called hypertension, develops when blood flows through your arteries at higher-than-normal pressures. The higher a person’s blood pressure levels, the more risk they have for other health problems, such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Some medical conditions can raise your risk of hypertension. Other conditions that can cause hypertension include chronic kidney disease, obesity, and smoking.
American Indian/Alaska Native
According to the NCHS’s National Health Interview Survey data, American Indian/Alaska Native adults were about 15% less likely to have diagnosed hypertension than the total population of adults in 2024.1
Asian American
According to National Health Interview Survey data, Asian American adults were about 20% less likely to have diagnosed hypertension than the total population of adults in 2024.2
Black/African American
According to National Health Interview Survey data, non-Hispanic Black adults were about 25% more likely to have diagnosed hypertension than the total population of adults in 2024.3
Hispanic/Latino
According to National Health Interview Survey data, Hispanic adults were about 31% less likely to have diagnosed hypertension than the total population of adults in 2024.4
Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander
According to National Health Interview Survey data, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander adults were approximately as likely to have diagnosed hypertension than the total population of adults in 2024.5
